SOP for operation, cleaning and calibration of vernier caliper

1.0 PURPOSE:

To lay down a procedure for Operation, cleaning and calibration of Vernier caliper.

2.0 SCOPE:

This procedure covers the operation, cleaning and calibration of Vernier caliper, which is used in production department of (Company name).

3.0 DEFINITIONS:

Nil.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY:

4.1 Production personal & Quality Assurance personal shall be responsible to Operation and cleaning of Vernier caliper and maintain the record.
4.2 Production personal shall ensure the calibration of the instrument.
4.3 Head – production or his designee to ensure compliance of procedure. 

5.0 PROCEDURE:

5.1 Cleaning procedure:

5.1.1 Clean the caliper with a dry clean cloth before and after use.
5.1.2 Care has to be taken to remove foreign particles by dry cloth from measuring jaws.
5.1.3 Always keep the caliper in the case provided.

5.2 Operating procedure:

5.2.1 Check the instrument calibration status.
5.2.2 Press ‘ON’ button to start the instrument.
5.2.3 Press mm / inch button for desired output in inches / millimeters.
5.2.4 Check whether the display is 0.00 mm / 0.000 In as per the mode selected.
5.2.5 Close the measuring jaws and read the display.
5.2.6 Check for the zero setting if there is any deviation, and then press Abs / 0 switch.
5.2.7 When the digital display is zero open the jaws slowly by moving the thumb roller.
5.2.8 Insert the object (which is to be measured) between it and then close the jaws by moving the thump roller.
5.2.9 Read the measurement as desired mode by pressing the inch / mm on the display and record the result.
5.2.10 Take out the sample, clean the jaws.
5.2.11 Switch off the instrument.
5.2.12 Keep the apparatus in its cabinet, when not in use.
Note: The outside and inside measuring jaws of caliper have a sharp edge, handle it care to avoid injury.

5.3 Calibration Procedure:

5.3.1 Calibration of the Vernier Caliper will be done through external agency from calibration Service Laboratory.
5.3.2 Frequency of calibration: Once in 365 days (± 15 days) and after each major Maintenance job.
