SOP for Operation and Maintenance of Infrared Sterilizer

1.0 PURPOSE:

To lay down the procedure for Operation and Maintenance of Infrared sterilizer.

2.0 SCOPE:

This SOP for Operation and Maintenance of Infrared sterilizer is applicable in Microbiology Laboratory, at (Company name).

3.0 DEFINITION:

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY:

4.1 Trainee/officer is responsible to perform activity.
4.2 Head-QC is responsible to ensure the compliance of the procedure. 

5.0 PROCEDURE:

5.1 Operation Procedure:

5.1.1 Place the sterilizer on flat surface.
5.1.2 Plug unit in to power outlet.
5.1.3 The voltage must be correspond to the voltage listed on the product nameplate.
5.1.4 The RED INDICATOR light will turn ON when the toggle switch is in the “HIGH” position (8250C).
5.1.5 The GREEN INDICATOR light will turn ON when the toggle switch is in the “LOW” position (5000C).
5.1.6 Wait for twenty minutes after the sterilizer is plugged in and switch is in the “high” position.
5.1.7 Gently insert the item to be sterilized in to the cylindrical sterilization area.
5.1.8 Avoid scrapping the sides of the element to ensure the longevity of loop.
5.1.9 The loop should remain inside the heater element area for 5 seconds, it is not necessary for the needle or loop to be glowing.
5.1.10 Always ensure that the item is held with an insulated material. Do not touch the sterilized item directly. 

5.2 Maintenance:

5.2.1 Only insulated loop holders should be used when inserting loops/needles in to the element.
5.2.2 Sterilizer is not intended for use with scalpels, forceps or any sharp objects. The use of such objects can cause damage to the element malfunction.
5.2.3 The loops/needles should not be allowed to remain in the heater element for extended periods of time which may shortens the usable life of the loops/needles.
5.2.4 Use only proper fuse for replacement.
5.2.5 Do not touch it or introduce any flammable or volatile materials in to the general area surrounding the sterilizer.
5.2.6 If the unit is not going to be used for extended periods of time, set the power switch in “OFF” position to conserve the life of the heater element.

Note: Do not keep the sterilizer in the “HIGH” position for more than 3hrs. If left ON for more than 3 hours, switch to the “LOW” position for 30 minutes, before resetting the sterilizer to “HIGH” position.
