Procedure for operation and cleaning of emergency eye / face wash station

1.0 PURPOSE:

To lay down the procedure for operation and cleaning of emergency eye / face wash station.

2.0 SCOPE:

This procedure for operation and cleaning of emergency eye / face wash station is applicable in Warehouse Department at (company name).

3.0 DEFINITIONS:

Nil.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY:

4.1 Users are responsible for operation of eye/ face wash station.
4.2 Warehouse personnel are responsible for operation and cleaning of eye/ face wash station.
4.3 Warehouse-Head shall be responsible to ensure compliance of the SOP. 

5.0 PROCEDURE:

5.1 Precautions:

5.1.1 Ensure the inlet hose of Emergency eye / face wash station for potable water connection is connected to the main-supply nozzle.
5.1.2 Ensure the outlet hose of Emergency eye / face wash station is connected to the drain. 

5.2 Operating Procedure:

5.2.1 Open fully the main-supply valve of the potable water.
5.2.2 Open both the closers / covers from the eye / face wash nozzles.
5.2.3 Place your eye / face towards the nozzle by bending the neck as per requirement.
5.2.4 Open the water supply of the eye / face wash nozzle by pushing the actuator slowly as per requirement.
5.2.5 Ensure that spray of the water is NOT directly aimed onto the eyeball, but aimed at the base of the nose.
5.2.6 Adjust your head to bring the affected area of eyes / face in the line to the running water sprinkle.
5.2.7 If required, hold eyelids open with the help of the thumb and index finger to ensure that effective rinsing has occurred behind the eyelid.
5.2.8 Flush with running water for approx. 15 minutes or more as per requirement and continuously roll the eyes to ensure full rinsing.
5.2.9 Flush and wash the other face parts affected area similarly.
5.2.10 In case, if irritation persists, repeat the flushing procedure.
5.2.11 Close the water supply by moving the actuator in the anti-clockwise direction. 

5.3 Cleaning Procedure:

5.3.1 Close the main-supply valve of potable water.
5.3.2 Disconnect the hose from water main supply valve.
5.3.3 Wear the hand-gloves.
5.3.4 Clean the inside and outside surfaces of the Emergency eye / face wash station with the dry lint-free cloth.
5.3.5 Dry the inside and outside surfaces of the Emergency eye / face wash station with the help of compressed air and dry lint-free cloth (if required).
5.3.6 Cover the nozzles after cleaning and drying activity is over.
5.3.7 Record the cleaning activity in Annexure-I.
5.3.8 Cleaning Frequency: After every use or weekly + 2 days (if there is no usage).
