1.0 PURPOSE:

To lay down a procedure for Laboratory safety guideline.

2.0 SCOPE:

This procedure is applicable to all analysts who have work in Quality Control Laboratory            at (Company name).

3.0 DEFINITION:

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY:

All staff and Lab attendant in QC

5.0 FREQUENCY:

At the time of new material received

6.0 PROCEDURE:

6.1 Prior to Working with Chemicals:

6.1.1 Prior to working with concentrate or hazardous chemical, the user should read the  Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of the chemical.

6.2 When Working with Chemicals:

6.2.1 Wear the proper personal protective equipment at the time of use such as gloves and face masks and eye protection etc. wherever required.
6.2.2 Use/work under the fume hood whenever required.
6.2.3 Label all flasks, beakers, and other containers. However, marker the vessel with all the ingredients that are placed in the vessel, If collecting the chemical as waste
6.2.4 Use both the hands when carrying a chemical bottle. If the bottle must be transported to another room.
6.2.5 Never throw chemicals in the trash. 

6.3 Selection of Appropriate Protective Equipment:

6.3.1 Wear eye protection. Use goggles.
6.3.2 Wear or use face protection.
6.3.3 Wear proper, chemical resistant gloves and boots if necessary.
6.3.4 Wear proper protective clothing such as lab coats, etc.
6.3.5 Maintain emergency equipment i.e. eye washer and safety shower and inspect it on daily basis.

6.4 Communication:

6.4.1 Read container labels before use.
6.4.2 Properly label all chemical materials and wastes.
6.4.3 Do not work alone in the laboratory or when the nearest person is too far away to hear a call for help.
6.4.4 Know what to do or intimae to the senior when over exposure to a chemical or harmful agent occurs.
6.4.5 Inform co-workers of hazardous work being conducted.

6.5 Proper Ventilation:

6.5.1 Fume hoods shall be checked for proper performance and more often if problems are suspected.

6.6 Personal Hygiene:

6.6.1 Do not pipette by mouth, rubber suction bulbs must be used on manual pipettes and siphons.
6.6.2 Do not use glassware for consuming food items.
6.6.3 Do not use cosmetics in the laboratory.
6.6.4 Drinking, eating and smoking is not permitted in the laboratories; food for human consumption shall not be kept in working or storage areas (laboratory refrigerators).
6.6.5 Do not use the emergency eyewash as a drinking fountain.
6.6.6 Wash hands thoroughly before leaving laboratory.

6.7 Storage:

6.7.1 Date and initial all new bottles of chemicals as they arrive in the lab. Dispose or recycle all chemicals as per their shelf life.
6.7.2 Do not store materials in front of eyewashes, exit doors, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment.
6.7.3 Do not store chemical materials or wastes in hallways or public areas.

6.8 Emergency Procedures and Equipment:

6.8.1 Train employees on where to find fire extinguishers, eyewashes, safety showers and telephones. Conduct training on how to use this equipment properly.
6.8.2 Whenever chemical spill on skin or in the eyes, immediately flush for 15 minutes or more in running water.
6.8.3 Before cleaning up a chemical spill, ensure the required personal protective equipment, including, at a minimum, appropriate eye protection, protective gloves, and a lab coat.
6.8.4 Use spillage kit wherever required.
6.8.5 Warnings, precautions, and written instructions must be given for work with violent, uncontrollable, or dangerous reactions.
6.8.6 Give immediate response to all kind of safety alarm (such as fire alarm) and evacuate immediately from working area to safe place/designated place.
6.8.7 Use first aid kit available in department whenever required.
