1.0 PURPOSE:
To define the procedure for disposal and handling of waste & hazardous waste.
2.0 SCOPE:
This procedure for disposal and handling of waste & hazardous waste is applicable at (Company name).
3.0 DEFINITION:
3.1 “WASTE” means any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it is worthless, defective and of no use.
3.2 “DISPOSAL” means any operation which does not lead to recycling, recovery or reuse and includes physic-chemical, biological treatment, incineration and disposal in secured landfill.
3.3 “HAZARDOUS WASTE” means any waste which by reason of any of its physical, chemical, reactive, toxic, flammable, explosive or corrosive characteristics causes danger or is likely to cause danger to health or environment.
3.4 “MANIFEST” means transporting document prepared and signed by the occupier or his representative authorized in accordance with the provisions of these rules.
3.5 “SLURRY” means mixture of solid denser than water suspended in water.
4.0 RESPONSIBILITY:
4.1 All departments: Responsible for segregation and discarding the waste into polyethylene bags / containers in coordination with housekeeping personnel.
4.2 Housekeeping: Responsible for collection and transport of the waste from the source of generation to the waste storage shed.
4.3 Concerned area in charge / supervisor: Responsible for initiating the waste disposal.
4.4 Engineering: Responsible for handling of hazardous waste disposal as per the requirement.
4.5 Plant Head: To verify the certification details in co-ordination with engineering team.
5.0 PROCEDURE:
5.1 Hazardous Waste:
5.1.1 The hazardous waste shall be generated through:
5.1.1.1 Process residues and wastes.
5.1.1.2 Out of specification products.
5.1.1.3 Date expired drugs/medicines
5.1.1.4 ETP Sludge.
5.1.2 The hazardous waste shall not be mixed with other waste.
5.1.3 The hazardous waste is in the form of solid, semi-solid or liquid.
5.1.4 The hazardous waste handling persons shall take proper personal protective equipment’s.
5.1.5 Concerned area in charge/ supervisor/designee shall send the hazardous waste in the form of slurry through housekeeping personnel to Hazardous waste storage area for storage. Engineering shall check the material weight and enter the details in Annexure-I. The storage period of the waste (Hazardous waste storage area) shall not exceed 90 days from the collection.
5.2 Routine Waste: The waste obtained during dispensing/ sampling, manufacturing process and packing operations are:
5.2.1 Discarded polybags, which are used for raw materials, packing materials, lubricated granules, pellets, compressed tablets and empty capsules.
5.2.2 Rejected Aluminium foil, PVC, PVDC and Glassine foils obtained during packing operations.
5.2.3 Discarded labels from raw and packaging materials.
5.2.4 Used cartons and corrugated boxes.
5.2.5 Used status labels.
5.2.6 Used Gloves, shoe covers and caps.
5.2.7 Discarded coded labels, cartons, catch covers obtained while printing.
5.2.8 Dust from Dust collector bags and cloth used for machine cleaning.
5.2.9 Worn out gaskets.
5.2.10 Aluminium rings obtained with raw material and packing material.
5.2.11 Remained foils difficult to consume which adheres to the roll. (Plain and printed).
5.2.12 Used rubber bands, paper material which comes from the suppliers. (Bundles wrapping)
5.2.13 Carry strap pieces which come along with the packing material and during the in process of packing operations.
5.2.14 Empty and used disinfectant bottles and containers belonging to plastic and glass origin, trays, bowls, rubber-bands, deshaped buckets.
5.2.15 Spilled powder / granules collected from dispensing/ sampling, granulation, compression, coating and capsule area.
5.2.16 Rejected Tablets/Capsules collected during the initial run of the Compression / Coating Capsule filling machines.
5.2.17 Waste collected by dust collector of vacuum cleaner and compression machine.
5.2.18 Waste collected from the manufacturing, primary packing and secondary packing areas.
5.2.19 Any remnants of printing solution.
5.2.20 Any type of remnants of coating solution used in granulation, coating, spray dryer etc.
5.3 Handling:
The below mentioned items to be handled and collected separately and are to be labelled as “Waste Disposal”. It must be sent to scrap yard for segregation by housekeeping person.
5.3.1 Discarded polybags.
5.3.2 Discarded labels, used corrugated boxes, cartons and printed cartons, catch covers.
5.3.3 Used gloves, shoe covers, disposable caps.
5.3.4 Discarded printed and plain Aluminium foil, glassine foil, PVC, PVDC.
5.3.5 Cloth used for machine cleaning.
5.3.6 Spilled powder, dust from dust collector bags and vacuum cleaner, granules, tablets and capsules waste.
5.3.7 Empty and used disinfectant bottles and containers belonging to plastic and glass origin, trays, bowls, rubber bands, de-shaped buckets.
5.4 Segregation:
5.4.1 Containers/bags labelled as “Waste Disposal” after reaching the scrap yard must be segregated by manual separation as printed cartons, corrugated boxes, used tie locks, gloves, shoe covers, disposable caps must be duly labelled and kept separately.
5.4.2 All discarded printed and plain Aluminium foil, PVC, PVDC must be collected in polybag, handled as waste must be duly labelled and kept separately.
5.4.3 Dust collector bags, handled as waste must be duly labelled and kept separately.
5.4.4 Cloth used for machine cleaning, handled as waste must be duly labelled and kept separately.
5.4.5 Empty disinfectant bottle, plastic bottles, trays, bowls, rubber bands, deshaped buckets, gloves and carry strap pieces handled as waste must be duly labelled and kept separately.
5.4.6 Spilled powder, granules, dust from dust collector bags and vacuum cleaner, pellets, tablets and capsules handled as hazardous waste for disposal must be separated and sent to ETP.
5.5 Storage:
7.5.1 All the waste materials received in scrap yard labelled as “Waste Disposal” and must be stored in specified areas.
7.5.2 Waste materials must sent to ETP and transportation record to be filled as per Annexure-II.
